RIDETZ
Today marked the kick-off to what should be an amazing 10 days. Most of the riders have arrived, and we drove together to Ngurdoto Lodge, where we are staying the night before the official send off tomorrow. The group seems great and is very excited with anticipation after months of preparation. I?ll leave you with a couple images of the student rider, Richard Augustino. The Foundation For Tomorrow held an essay contest to determine which of their scholarship students would

balancing it all
After a great experience speaking at the National Association of Professional Child Photographers' Retreat, I joined my good friend Dane Sanders for another episode of askdane.com, and we continued our ongoing discussion about the elusive concept of *balancing it all*. Since I've heard some pretty interesting feedback from this fun, casual chat (commiserations, observations, questions, and suggestions), I thought I'd share it here, as well. Would love to hear if any of you

(on) the other side of the lens
One of the major advantages of being at an international convention, surrounded by a multitude of talented photographers from all over the world, is that you have this terrific opportunity to line up a shoot, update the headshots, and get some real experience on the other side of the lens. Which, as any good shooter knows, goes a long way towards bettering you as an overall photographer. I had a terrific opportunity to do just that when I met up with Sue Bryce, an Australian

an Interview by crash taylor
A huge thanks to Crash Taylor for a very fun interview. Crash is an exceptionally talented England-based photographer who has interviewed some exceptionally intriguing people ... and then, recently, lowered his standards a bit (sweet soul) and interviewed me... You can check out the rest of the interview here. A special thanks to Australian-based Sue Bryce for the new headshot - she also photographed a few other lovely images while we were in Las Vegas, which I'll post next

Announcing: Inside Contemporary Children’s Photography
Available now on DVD! After nearly one year of storyboarding, filming, editing, animating, audio mixing and more editing, I am thrilled to announce the release of Inside Contemporary Children's Photography, a collaboration between our studio and Ballard Productions (available now on DVD). When we first started thinking about putting something like this together, we had no idea what it would turn into ... and what it became was due, in huge part, to the direction of Rex Ball

professional photographer magazine
Thanks to Professional Photographer Magazine for running such a cool article about my shooting style in the new December issue. Cute title: Bring on The Scamp. So much fun to see and read through it - and, as always, a lovely layout. The topic dovetails nicely with the presentation I'll be giving at Imaging USA in Nashville Monday, January 11th, 2010. (And a big thanks for the interview, friend and fellow photographer, Audrey Woulard. It was a good match, as Audrey and ar

a chocolate slip ‘n slide birthday dream
When my Sophie requested a unique twist on her birthday celebration, my first thought was, yeah....a chocolate slip n' slide? Fun idea ... so, what else would you like to do...? But she really stuck with her request, and we finally started brainstorming ideas on how to really make it happen. Also got some great tips from friends on how to pull it off ... and, thus, the celebration moved from conception state to actual full-on actualization and mygoodness, seriously, hilari

Literacy Through Photography
Today I would like to tell you a little about what I was up to this summer (which will also explain my hiatus from the blog). I was lucky to spend all of June and July in Arusha, Tanzania working to help develop a Literacy Through Photography program there. Literacy Through Photography, or LTP, is very difficult to briefly describe, but in short it is an educational model that introduces cameras into elementary school classrooms as a way to stimulate creativity, help students

Holding Strong. and soft.
My youngest child, sweet Ana Elisa (whose adoption I chronicled last year and, also, the subject of my very last blog entry:) recently decided to style her own hair. She pulled the same move her sister had when she was also near the same age. She snuck some scissors into the bathroom and decided to design her hair in a way that arguably defies the style of modern times. Or, really, let's face it ... any recent times that I might happen to know of. As divine timing would h
